COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS II (SSI 3RD TERM)

TELECOMMUNICATION

This is the exchange of information over significant distances using electronic medium such as telephone, cable, telegraph etc. Telecommunication system is any system that is used for communication over distances. It is an Interaction over a distance by cable, telephone, or other means.

Types of Telecommunication:

                a. Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) (Land Line): PSTN is the network which allows any telephone in the world to Communicate.

                b. Mobile Phone System (GSM): This is a digital telecommunication system; example of a Mobile Phone device is the (GSM) Global System for Mobile Communication. The GSM can be used for voice communication, text messaging, and data transfer.

CSPT – Circuit Switched Packet Telephone System

                c. Satellite Telephone System: This is the type of mobile phone that connects to orbiting satellite while other mobile phone that gets their signals from a physical telecommunication mast. An example of this device is Thuraya.

                Fixed Wireless Telephone System

DATA NETWORK

This is an electronic communication system that allows the transmission and reception of data such as letters, documents etc.

Types of Data Network

a. Personal Area Network (PAN): PAN is a computer network around an individual. A user can transfer data on this network using computer, a cell phone or handheld computing device such as a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). Cable may not be necessary for this type of data network. Bluetooth or infra-red are mainly used.

b. Local Area Network (LAN): A LAN connects network devices over a relatively short distance, example is a network can send and receive data on personal computer or laptop using cable or wireless medium.

c. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): This is a computer network that covers a metropolis such as a city, campus, etc. Users can exchange data on their computers within MAN.

d. Wide Area Network (WAN): This is a network that covers several cities, states, and even countries.

e. Internet: An internet is a global data communication system that inter-connects different networks.

 INFORMATION SYSTEM

This is the collection of components such as people, procedures, data, database, telecommunication systems, software and hardware, that are used to gather and analyze digital information.

Types of Information System

Here are two (2) types of Information system that are used to gather and analyse digital information.

i. Data Processing System: This is also known as Transaction Processing Systems (TPs). They are used to process data in firms and organizations that are not online, example of these processing systems are:

• Billing system (eg. PHCN)

• Tax computing (eg. Revenue Boards or Agencies)

• Payroll system (eg. e-payment for workers)

ii. Global Positioning System: This is a global information system that uses satellite to transmit signal information to earth from the Orbit or Space via GPS receivers.

 Functions of GPS Receiver

 ▪ It is used determine user’s exact location on the globe.

▪ It is used to determine the time difference for location or region (e.g. GMT & Wet African Time).

▪ It is used to determine sunrise and sunset.

▪ It is used to determine trip distance as commonly used by airplane.

 Evaluation:
